Sensor Cleaning and Noise Reduction

The August 2004 meeting of the Camera Owners of the Bay Area (COBA) user group will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) from 7:30-10:30 pm.

Sensor Cleaning

Are dust bunnies multiplying on your camera’s sensor and on your images? We’ll show you how to find these dust spots on your camera and how to get rid of them! A number of sensor cleaning products will be demonstrated, including the SpeckGrabber, Sensor Swabs, Pec Pads and more!

If you have sensor cleaning products that you would like to feature in our presentation, let us know what you’ll be bringing on the COBA-TALK mailing list!

Here are links to web sites that discuss sensor cleaning:

Noise Reduction Software

A number of software packages are available to reduce noise in your images. We’ll take a look at several of them, including Noise Ninja 2.0, Adobe Photoshop CS, Capture One, Neat Image, and Fred Miranda’s ISO X.

We have two sample noisy images (taken with a Canon EOS-1D) for you to test your noise reduction skills:

You may use any program(s) to reduce the noise and to make the best prints. Please make notes and bring the prints to the meeting for everyone to analyze, critique, and discuss.

Feel free to bring other prints that demonstrate your noise reduction techniques.

Needs

For the sensor cleaning presentation, we have a SpeckGrabber and a bulb blower, but we need some Pec Pads, Eclipse sensor cleaning fluid and Sensor Swabs for the meeting.

For the noise reduction program, we need someone who uses NeatImage and is willing to talk for a few minutes about the program. Also, if there are people who use a different noise reduction program other than the ones listed above, let me know!
