Event Photography

Nelse Hansen (http://www.eliteflight.com) and Brian Jackson (http://www.actionathletics.com & http://www.brianjacksonphoto.com) will discuss lessons learned, logistics, onsite workflow, post processing, and fulfilment with event photography at the September 8, 2004 meeting of the Camera Owners of the Bay Area.

Event photography is different than your typical magazine or newspaper assignment whose goal is to tell a story of a particular time. The goal of event photography is to photograph the participants of an event — usually a sporting event, performance, or exhibition — and then sell those photos to the participants (or their parents).

There are many types of event photography, Nelse and I just happen to both shoot sporting events. EliteFlight focuses on indoor sports, while Action Athletics focuses more on outdoor team sports.

We will both discuss things about the various aspects of event photography:

  • The logistics of event photography with everything ranging from the number of photographers, booking events, and equipment.
  • Relationships with photographers: hiring, training, shooting technique, contracts, equipment choices, copyright ownership, etc.
  • On site workflow: onsite editing, storage/backups, methods to present images for sale, payment methods/ordering systems, printing onsite. RAW vs. JPEG.
  • Website: Roll your own, 3rd party service, protecting images, ordering system, pricing strategies, product offering, etc.
  • Post processing: What happens when someone orders things? payment methods: (Credit Cards, check, cash), workflow, white balance, noise reduction, etc.

Several of these items cross each other and sometimes the order is slightly different.
